Q&A with Heather Day, Camp Director at Frederica Academy! | Golden Isles Moms

Summer means one major thing in our house; camps. The nostalgia of sun-kissed days on my youth spent with friends at summer camps has me signing up my own children for all the fun possibilities in the Golden Isles! Golden Isles Moms chatted with Heather Day, camp director for Frederica Academy on camp expectations and how to prepare for all the fun!

Golden Isles Moms: Tell us your role in the summer programs at Frederica Academy.
Heather Day: I am the Director of the FA Summer Programs. I currently recruit teachers for our signature Camp Knights and Little Knight as well as plan the curriculum activities and field trips. I also coordinate with local stakeholders in our community to set up our specialty camps that change from week to week.

GIM: What should parents and campers expect when attending FA summer camps?
HD: When campers attend our summer programs, they should expect to have fun! While our camps range from sports to music to our theme camp, each camp offers a variety of activities to get our campers involved in stimulating activities for the mind, body, and spirit.

GIM: How should parents and campers prepare for summer camp?
HD: Parents should prepare by registering as early as possible. Our camp registration opens in January and we have grown significantly in the last few summers and have been consistently filling up. Additionally, parents should read over our camper handbook before registration for a summary of all of our amazing camp offerings. It is also beneficial to read over the weekly emails that get sent out on the Wednesday or Thursday before the start date of the camp.

GIM: What is your most popular camp throughout the summer?
HD: It is really hard to point out a most popular camp because so many of them are great options that are full. I would say that our most known camps are our sports camp with Kayak Camp being in high demand this summer, Our Camp Knights has also gained in popularity as the campers tend to love the field trips.

GIM: What is one tip you can give parents to help ease a hesitant child going to camp?
HD: I would tell parents to give me a call or send me an email if they are hesitant. I am happy to go over what makes us unique and how we strive to make summer full of fun.

Here are our camper essentials!

Water Bottle: We love HydroFlask which is easy for kids to open and keeps water cool for hours.

Monogrammed Beach Towels: We recommend using initials rather than full names so kids can recognize their towel but still stay safe.

Bug Spray: We love Alo Naturals on St. Simons. With all natural ingredients it is safe for kids and keeps those pesky gnats away!

Lunch Box: Bentgo boxes are great with multiple compartments for a variety of lunch items and snacks.

Swim Lessons: If your child will be in the water at all in camp, we recommend getting swim lesson by a certified professional.
