The Perfect Mint Julep | Golden Isles Moms
Derby Day is a BIG day in our house! Not only is my husband a long time horse racing fan but our oldest son was born the day of the Belmont Stakes, the final race in a set of three (starting with the Kentucky Derby followed by the Preakness) which give thoroughbreds the chance at the Triple Crown.
While each race is special in its own respect, the Kentucky Derby is noted by its signature cocktail; the Mint Julep. As a long time bartender and newly anointed southerner, here is my recipe for this refreshing drink!

The Perfect Mint Julep

Ingredients:
3 oz Bourbon (such as Old Forrester, Four Roses, or Maker’s Mark)
1 oz Simple Syrup
8-10 Mint Sprigs
Crushed Ice

Directions:
Place 8 mint sprigs at the bottom of your julep cup (these from Amazon are adorable but we like to use or Derby glasses from a few years back!). Lightly muddle (or bruise) the mint leaves without tearing them.

Add the simple syrup and bourbon and top with crushed ice until mounted above the rim.

Garnish with the remaining mint and a straw. Enjoy!
